Many residents of Sterling are turning to CoolSculpting® as a way of improving the way that they look and the way that they feel about themselves. This revolutionary treatment has made it possible for people to address pockets of unwanted fat that have been bothering them for some time. What is so nice about this treatment is that it creates quantifiable results without requiring a person to go under the knife or submit themselves to another dangerous procedure.
While this treatment is not a weight loss program designed to take a person who is morbidly obese and bring them down to a healthy weight, it is a body contouring treatment. What this means is that an individual who has excess pockets of fat, maybe on their thighs, arms, love handles, or another part of their body, can take steps to remove the fat with the goal of improving their overall contours.
There are many individuals in Sterling who have gone through the process of dieting and exercising. They have lost a lot of weight, and when they step on the scale, they are happy with what they see. The problem with diet and exercising is that you cannot pinpoint where you are going to lose weight from. You can diet and exercise until you are blue in the face but can’t tell the fat on the back of your arms, for example, to disappear.
Many who have lost weight from diet and exercise feel frustrated with their results. Since their weight loss is uneven, the parts of their body that did not lose as much fat now look very large in comparison to the rest of the body. For example, some people have lost weight in their upper body and in their legs but held onto the weight around their hips or buttocks. So now they just look lopsided.
Body contouring treatments have helped many people improve the way that they see themselves. Since they feel comfortable in the clothing that they wear, since they feel comfortable being on the beach in swimwear, and since they feel comfortable with what they see when they look at themselves in the mirror naked, their confidence grows. This confidence affects their ability to find a good job or get a promotion, find a suitable romantic partner, and just feel confident in social settings. All of this speaks to the importance of having a good body image.
Why Having a Good Body Image is So Important
When you have a healthy body image, you feel comfortable with the way that your body looks. You have a positive view of your appearance, and you have a good view of your self-worth. However, when there are things about your body that you hate, such as having excess pockets of fat around your midsection, your arms, or your thighs, you may have a negative body image. A negative body image is going to put you at risk for developing serious mental and emotional conditions, including eating disorders and depression.
What’s important to remember about body image is that it not only has to do with the way that you see yourself, but it also has to do with the way that you behave and the way that you feel based on your self appraisal. For example, if a person feels negatively about the excess fat they have around their midsection, they may refrain from wearing clothing that they really like. Or they may turn down an invitation to go to the beach, go to the swimming pool, or engage in another activity that would require them to expose the parts of their body that they don’t feel comfortable with.
Both men and women face body image issues. Research has shown that more women are dissatisfied with their bodies, and this is one of the reasons they think depression is more common among women than men.
Having a negative body image lowers one’s self-esteem. A negative body image makes a person not want to be around other people. Or when they are around other people, they are going to obsess constantly about the part of their body that they don’t like. As a result, a person who went through the process of dieting and exercising and who has lost a ton of weight but still has those stubborn pockets of fat may obsess over exercise and over what they eat.
There are a number of factors that could influence how a person perceives themselves. Weight is a major factor. If a person was teased and bullied in youth for how they look, being told that they were too fat or having other aspects of their appearance criticized, it can have a negative impact on them. Social media can also make a person feel bad about how they look.
Dieting and exercising but not getting the results that you want can make you feel like you failed. Everyone around you may have noticed how much weight you have lost. They compliment you on your weight loss and tell you how good you look. However, your focus may be on those stubborn pockets of fat that you just can’t get rid of.
If your body image issues are due to things that you can safely address, addressing these issues may lead to improved confidence and improved image. For example, a person who feels frustrated about having those stubborn pockets of fat on their back, midsection, or arms may turn to a non-surgical treatment like CoolSculpting® to make those stubborn pockets of fat disappear. Getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat may encourage an individual to keep up a healthy diet and exercise routine with the goal of maintaining the healthy appearance that they feel comfortable with.
Positive action is key to having and maintaining a positive body image. When you know that you are doing something to address the issue that is affecting you, it leads you to have positive thoughts. The more positive your thoughts are, the better you will feel about who you are and how you look. Working on accepting how you look and taking healthy steps to improve the things about yourself that you do not like are keys to having a positive body image.
Weight Loss vs. Body Contouring
CoolSculpting® is a body contouring treatment. There is a marked difference between body contouring and weight loss. Weight loss does not always equate to a sculpted appearance. Body fat reduction, on the other hand, has the ability to change the contours and the shape of your body.
To better understand this, we need to explain how fat cells work. Your body has a constant number of fat cells. This number is set when you are a teenager. There may be a small variation in the number of fat cells in your body throughout adulthood, but it is minimal. The number of fat cells an individual has varies from person to person.
This may be surprising to many because the common belief is that when a person gets fatter, they have more fat cells. But that’s not the case. What happens is that the fat cells that you already have just expand. This is why you put on weight. When you diet and exercise, the fat cells lose their content and start to shrink. This is why you get skinnier when you don’t eat as many fatty foods and when you exercise more. However, if you stop your healthy habits, your fat cells are going to start to expand again and those unwanted bulges are just going to come back.
With CoolSculpting®, a controlled cooling technique is used to target the fat cells in a specific area. The controlled cooling actually destroys the fat cells that are being treated. With time, the fat cells are flushed out of your body. Once the fat cells in a particular area are destroyed, your body does not regenerate them. They are gone for good. Herein you can see the difference between weight loss, which is simply a reduction in the size of the fat cells that you have, and body contouring, which is the actual destruction of fat cells in areas that do not respond well to diet and exercise.
Is CoolSculpting® Safe?
This is a common question, and the direct answer is yes. This treatment has been performed thousands of times, and the results of the treatment are overwhelmingly positive. This is why it was approved by the FDA a number of years ago.
When you have the treatment done, the practitioner is going to vacuum the skin above the area that’s being treated into an applicator. This applicator is where the fat cells are cooled. For the first few minutes of the treatment, you may feel the cold temperature. However, after a couple of minutes, the treated area will go numb.
The temperature will get low enough to destroy fat cells, but it will not get low enough to damage your skin, muscles, or other tissue. Fat cells freeze and die at a much higher temperature than the other tissues in your body. You can visualize this when you think about what happens when you take a cut of meat from room temperature and put into a refrigerator. At room temperature the fat is in a soft state. When you put the meat into the refrigerator, the fat will congeal. However, the meat itself remains unchanged. This is a similar idea to what happens when fat is treated with controlled cooling.
For most individuals, the treatment takes no more than one hour. Since this is a non-invasive treatment, there is no recovery time. Once the treatment is done, you are able to leave the office and go back to your everyday activities.
The treatment will start to yield results in between four and six months. Research has shown that during that time frame, people will experience on average a 20 percent reduction in the fat cells around the treated area. During these four to six months, the treated fat cells die, they break apart, they release their fatty content, and then the cellular debris along with the fatty content that has been released are removed from the body via the lymphatic system.
The cells that are destroyed don’t return. If a person maintains a healthy diet and exercise routine, new fat cells will not reappear. However, if you don’t diet and exercise and you just gorge on food, you are still going to put on weight. The weight will just be distributed to other parts of your body.
Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?
The best way for you to get an answer to this question is to have an in person consultation with our medical professionals. However, there are a few guidelines that you can follow when answering this question. For example, in order for the treatment to work, you need to have at least an inch of fat in the treated area. If you cannot pinch the fat, then you likely do not have enough to benefit from CoolSculpting®. This treatment works the best with individuals who have muffin tops or pockets of fat behind their arms or on their thighs.
This treatment is great for contouring one or two areas. It is not going to produce as dramatic of results as you would see with liposuction. However, it should produce noticeable results.
This treatment is a medical treatment. As such, the healthier you are, the better results you are going to get. During our initial consultation with you, we will discuss any medical conditions you have and any medications you are currently taking that might have an impact on the results of your treatment.
